The root source of crime must be identified and struck

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has emphasized on the need to finding out why crimes are being committed in addition to punishing criminals.
He said, "To build a safe society, the reasons behind crime must be identified and the root source must be struck. If the root source can be stopped, it will be possible to reduce the crime rate in society."
He said these things while speaking as the chief guest at an event marking the 43rd founding anniversary of the Bangladesh Crime Reporters Association (CRAB) in Segunbagicha in the capital on Wednesday (September 16).
Noting that the nature of crime has changed over time and taken on a technology-dependent and digital form, the minister said, "As a result, alongside modern laws and technology, the responsible role of the media is urgent in curbing crime. Investigative journalism is an important means not only of highlighting crime incidents, but also of bringing the reasons behind them and the activities of criminal gangs to the fore."
He said that to tackle online gambling, match-fixing, and organized crime, old laws have been reformed and the "Gambling Prevention Act, 2026" has been enacted. At the same time, the "Narcotics Control (Amendment) Act, 2026" has been enacted to control drug crimes.
Speaking about crime reporters, the minister said, "If any journalist is harmed or injured while performing their duties, assistance through the CSR fund and other means will be considered. At the same time, the matter of giving certificates on behalf of the Ministry of Home Affairs or the police department as recognition for special contributions to investigative journalism will also be reviewed legally."
The event was presided over by CRAB President Mirza Mehedi Tamal. Others who spoke included Member of Parliament Shafiqul Islam Masud, DMP Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed, and Assistant to the Prime Minister (Political) Md. Rashed Khan, among others. Later, the home minister inaugurated the program marking CRAB's 43rd founding anniversary by cutting a cake. The event was conducted by CRAB General Secretary MM Badshah.
