Women’s wing holds broom procession against MP Amir Hamza in Kushtia city

A broom procession and protest were held in Kushtia by leaders and activists of the Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal demanding punishment for Kushtia 3 MP Mufti Amir Hamza over alleged derogatory remarks about reserved women’s seat MP Farida Yasmin.

Separate protest processions of the Mohila Dal were brought out from Kushtia Court Station and the Public Library premises at around 1 pm on Tuesday, September 15. The two processions later merged and marched through important roads in the city.

During the procession, the protesting leaders and activists chanted various slogans against Mufti Amir Hamza. A brief rally was held at Panch Rastar Mor after the procession.

Mohila Dal leaders expressed their anger at the rally. They said such indecent remarks about a woman public representative are completely unacceptable. They said Amir Hamza’s remarks amounted to extreme arrogance. They demanded immediate legal and organisational action against him.

Shilpi, president of Kushtia city Mohila Dal, along with leaders and activists from different levels of the organisation, attended the rally.

Speaking about the matter, reserved women’s seat MP Farida Yasmin said, “A video of Amir Hamza has gone viral on Facebook. He made a comment about our senior and district leaders.” She added, “I think this is why the activists may have held a procession against him.”

The tension arose over remarks made by Mufti Amir Hamza at a Waz Mahfil in Daulatpur, Kushtia recently. In the speech, referring to Kushtia reserved women’s seat MP Farida Yasmin, he said, “The constitutional importance of a reserved women’s seat MP is none and she did not receive any direct votes.”

He further said, “I received 183,000 votes. And you have no votes. Even if you are given responsibility, constitutionally there is no importance and there is no system in the state.”

He also allegedly made some offensive and suggestive remarks directed at Farida Yasmin. In the same speech, Amir Hamza criticised alleged bias among officials of the Kushtia administration.

He alleged that an attempt was being made to give an opportunity to a particular group while bypassing local MPs in the appointment of fertiliser dealers at the DC office.

Addressing government officials including the DC, SP, UNO and OC, he warned, “If you try to run the area by bringing in any particular group while excluding the people chosen by the public, it will not be accepted.” He said the public would be informed through a press conference if such bias continued.

Several calls were made to MP Mufti Amir Hamza to seek his comment on the matter, but he did not answer the phone.
