Gulshan police OC withdrawn after AL procession

Gulshan Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Daud Hossain has been withdrawn after Awami League and its associate organizations held a procession in Gulshan, Dhaka.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmad confirmed the matter in an order on Wednesday. The order said due to administrative reasons, Daud has been attached to the Central Reserve Office of the Police Headquarters and Administration Department.
On 11 September, leaders and activists of the Awami League (AL) and Chhatra League brought out a procession. When police obstructed, cocktails and brickbats were thrown from the procession.
To bring the situation under control, police fired two rounds of rubber bullets and detained two individuals along with cocktails. A case was then filed at Gulshan Police Station under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
Conducting raids across various locations, DMP has arrested 72 people so far. Following the incident, questions arose regarding how leaders and activists of Awami League gathered in such an important area surrounded by the prime minister’s official residence, embassies, and diplomats’ residences.
Discussions also took place regarding the failure of law enforcement agencies and intelligence surveillance, giving rise to rumors that the Gulshan Police Station OC was being withdrawn.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said there was no negligence on the part of the police. Claiming that intelligence information regarding the procession was present, he added, “The police were not able to properly comprehend or understand the matter at that specific time on Friday. There is no scope to call this a direct intelligence failure. Later, legal action was taken.”
