Professor Abul Kasem Fazlul Haq Passes Away

Professor Abul Kasem Fazlul Haq
Scholar, political thinker, and academic Professor Abul Kasem Fazlul Haq has passed away. He died this afternoon, Sunday, after suffering cardiac arrest.
Abul Kasem Fazlul Haq served as president of the Bangla Academy. Professor Mohammad Azam, director general of the Bangla Academy, confirmed his death to Agamir Somoy.
“He fell ill this afternoon and was taken to a hospital in Mirpur. He breathed his last sometime between 2:30 pm and 3:00 pm. We are heading to Sir’s residence from the Bangla Academy. We will inform everyone once a decision is made regarding his burial and the arrangements for paying tribute,” he said.
Abul Kasem Fazlul Haq was widely known for his ideas and theories on nonpartisan politics. He was born on September 30, 1940, in Pakundia village of Pakundia Upazila in Kishoreganj.
He taught for many years in the Department of Bangla at the University of Dhaka. He also played an important role in promoting the use of the Bangla language at all levels.
In addition to editing two periodicals, Sundaram and Lokayat, he authored numerous important books. More than 20 of his books have been published, including Ekushey February Movement, Political Philosophy, Literary Thought, and Simple Words on Culture.
He also edited several books, including Bangladesh’s Culture in the Light of History and Thoughts on the Homeland. In recognition of his contributions, he received the Bangla Academy Award in 1981.
In October 2024, the government appointed him president of the Bangla Academy for a three-year term.
His only son, Faisal Arefin Dipan, was murdered on October 31, 2015, at his publishing house in Dhaka’s Aziz Super Market.
