Dhaka University (DU) investigation committee recommended the permanent expulsion of Ershad Halim of the Chemistry Department following allegations of sexual harassment against male students.
Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Mohammed Almujaddade Alfasane confirmed the matter to Agamir Somoy on Tuesday.
The university’s syndicate approved the investigation report during its meeting on Monday.
A syndicate member told Agamir Somoy that the investigation committee found the sexual harassment allegations against Ershad to be true. Based on the findings, the committee proposed his permanent expulsion, a recommendation that the syndicate meeting accepted unanimously.
The member added that the case has now been sent to the university tribunal. The tribunal will give the final decision. After that, the decision will be finally passed in the syndicate meeting.
Within the administrative structure of the university, the tribunal is established to resolve serious allegations, breaches of discipline, or unethical conduct.
The syndicate member emphasized that Ershad is going to be permanently expelled.
The controversy began when several students from the Chemistry Department accused Ershad of sexual harassment. These allegations eventually led to a criminal case and his arrest by the police.
Following his arrest, the university administration relieved him of all academic responsibilities.
