Dhaka University Syndicate decided to cancel the general secretary (GS) position of Golam Rabbani from the 2019 Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU).
Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Mohammed Almujaddade Alfasane confirmed the matter to Agamir Somoy on Tuesday.
Vice-Chancellor (VC) ABM Obaidul Islam decided the matter during a syndicate meeting held on Monday.
This move follows a 26 November ruling by the university’s academic council, which cancelled Rabbani’s MPhil enrollment after allegations of fraudulent admission were proven. Rabbani is the former GS of the now-banned Chhatra League.
Almujaddade said, “Since his studentship has been cancelled, the Syndicate has agreed to cancel his GS position. It has been sent to the legal advisor for a final decision.”
A syndicate member told Agamir Somoy that while the council has decided to strip Rabbani of the post, authorities are still evaluating whether Rashed Khan, who secured the second-highest number of votes, can be officially declared the GS.
Rashed Khan originally raised allegations of election rigging immediately following the 2019 DUCSU polls. While an investigation committee was formed at that time, the university never released its report.
Following the July mass uprising, Rashed resubmitted his complaint to the then VC. In response, university authorities established a new six-member investigation committee led by the Treasurer.
The committee ultimately recommended declaring Rabbani’s election as DUCSU GS illegal, noting that his admission into the MPhil program prior to the election did not follow proper procedures.
