Waterlogging Grips Dhaka After Days of Rain, Alleys and Main Roads Submerged

Dhaka has been experiencing continuous rainfall over the past several days. The intensity of the rain increased further from Saturday night (July 11). Heavy downpours continued for several hours at dawn. Intermittent rainfall is still continuing.
A visit to different roads in the capital showed that rainwater has submerged the surrounding alleys of Dhanmondi 27, Dhanmondi 32, Tejturi Bazar, Sukrabad and Monipur High School. People from different walks of life were seen rushing to their destinations despite the rain.
In some parts of the capital, water has overflowed from the alleys onto the main roads. In some areas, water reached knee level, while in others it was waist-deep. Residents have been suffering immense hardship after leaving their homes as roads across the capital remain inundated.

Ashikur Rahman, a resident, left Jigatala in Dhanmondi at 8 am and reached his office in Karwan Bazar at 9:30 am He said traffic congestion, combined with waterlogged roads, had multiplied commuters' suffering several times over.
According to Ashik, this picture of waterlogging in Dhaka whenever it rains is nothing new.
Naznin Rahman, a private-sector employee, left her home in Tejturi Bazar and found knee-deep water on the streets. She somehow reached her destination after wading through dirty and contaminated water.

Mehedi Hasan, a resident, said he paid Tk 400 in fare to travel from Monipuri Para to Karwan Bazar via Asad Gate because water had accumulated on the roads. He said even the inner alleys of Monipuri Para had been inundated. Usually, these roads do not become waterlogged.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department said Dhaka recorded 97 millimeters of rainfall in the last 24 hours.
In its weather forecast issued at 7 am for the following six hours, the department said rain or thundershowers may occur until 1 pm The sky may also remain cloudy to temporarily overcast. Daytime temperatures in Dhaka may remain largely unchanged.
