Prime Minister Tarique Rahman called upon everyone to build a greener and more environment-friendly country, requesting children to plant at least one tree every year.
He made these remarks on Wednesday while inaugurating a nationwide tree-planting program at government primary schools at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center in Dhaka.
Prior to the Primary Education Medal-2026 presentation ceremony, he launched the program by planting a Neem sapling, reports BSS.
Organized by the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, the tree-planting initiative has commenced in all government primary schools across the country. As part of this program, around 2,00,000 saplings were planted simultaneously.
Addressing the children at the event, Tarique said, “You will try to plant one tree every year. Whether it is at school or around your home - wherever possible, plant a tree.”
He also encouraged the children to learn more about trees, adding that they should research the internet to find out how much oxygen a tree produces and how it benefits humans. This, he noted, would create an opportunity to learn about a new tree every year.
Tarique remarked that as trees planted at school grow, they will provide shade and resting areas for students. Similarly, trees planted at home will create a cool environment and provide fresh air.
Describing the day as memorable, he said, “Today we all together planted many trees in the soil of Bangladesh.”
Following the inauguration of the tree-planting program, the prime minister visited various nature and environment-related projects created by the young students.
