State Minister of Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam urged more effective international measures to repatriate Rohingyas to Myanmar.
Speaking at a high-level panel discussion of the ECOSOC Humanitarian Affairs Segment at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Thursday, Shama also called for the protection of civilians and the upholding of international humanitarian law.
She emphasized the necessity of ensuring accountability for violations of international humanitarian law, increasing investment in conflict prevention, and strengthening coordination among humanitarian, peace, and development activities.
Shama added that the rising issue of technology-based harassment and abuse against women and girls is deeply concerning, reiterating her call to establish a global platform to address such threats.
Expressing deep concern over the negative impact of the ongoing funding crisis on Rohingya women and girls, she underscored the importance of continued international cooperation for a sustainable solution to the crisis. She specifically called for their swift return to their native country, Myanmar.
Moreover, Shama held a courtesy meeting with Vietnam’s Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Minh Vu.
During the session, both sides exchanged views on matters of mutual interest and discussed ways to strengthen bilateral and multilateral cooperation.
