12 Caught Red-Handed in JU Ragging Incident

Jahangirnagar University campus
Authorities at Jahangirnagar University (JU) have accused a group of students of ragging and abusing freshers under the pretext of teaching them ‘manners.’ The university administration caught 12 students red-handed in connection with the incident. Officials detained them from the Jahangirnagar University School and College ground at around 2 am on Friday.
All of the accused are students of the 54th batch of the Department of History. They are Subhashish Roy, Nasim Uddin Majumdar, Abu Abtahi Anik, Naimul Hasan, Abdullah Mahdi, Isfak Hadi Sikto, Md. Raihan Khan, Kazi Shah Jamshed Alam Nabil, Saifullah Mansur Anan, Md. Mahfuzur Rahman Anto, Sri Kartik Chandra Roy, and Naim Ahmed Sajib.
Eyewitnesses said several freshers from the 55th batch of the Department of History were first called to the Mahua Mancha at around 11 pm and later taken to the Jahangirnagar University School and College ground. After keeping them seated there for about 40 minutes, the seniors took them to a secluded area adjacent to the field. They then allegedly subjected the freshers to verbal abuse targeting their parents, forced them to stand holding their ears, and harassed them mentally and physically under the guise of taking ‘formal introduction’ and teaching ‘manners.’
Victim student Md. Ehsanul Haque said, “They used obscene language about our parents. They made us stand holding our ears and subjected us to mental and physical abuse in the name of formal introductions. Later, JUCSU leaders Mohammad Ali Chishti and Husne Mobarak, along with the proctorial team, arrived and rescued us.”
Another student from the same batch, Raj Khan, said this was not the first such incident. “On previous occasions, they took us to the field late at night and subjected us to physical and mental abuse in the name of teaching manners. We want exemplary punishment for those responsible.”
Husne Mobarak, JUCSU’s secretary for health and food affairs and a member of the Anti-Ragging Cell, said, “We received information from a student at around 2 am and went to the scene. After verifying the allegations, we informed the administration. Assistant proctors and security officials later arrived and took the accused students to the security office. During questioning, they admitted to the incident.”
He added, “At a time when the entire campus is speaking out against ragging, taking students to a secluded place late at night and harassing them is highly condemnable. JUCSU will maintain a strict stance against such incidents.”
Meanwhile, the accused students submitted written confessions to the proctorial team. In the statements, they acknowledged that they had called 13 students from the 55th batch of the Department of History to the School and College field and ragged them in the name of teaching manners.
Assistant Proctor Professor Dr. Abdur Razzak said, “We went to the scene that night and found the allegations to be true. We then brought the individuals concerned to the security office and collected preliminary information. The matter will be placed before a meeting of the proctorial body. The university administration will take further action based on the decisions of that meeting.”
