A Dhaka court tribunal sentenced three men to life imprisonment for the gang rape of a young woman in the Nawabganj police station area 24 years ago.
Public prosecutor Md Ershad Alam George confirmed the matter on Tuesday.
Judge Munshi Md Moshiar Rahman of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 delivered the verdict.
Each convict was also fined Tk 1 lakh. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional year of simple imprisonment.
The convicts are Sujan, Julhas, and Mohammad. As Julhas remains a fugitive, the court issued an arrest warrant against him. The other two convicts were sent to jail.
According to the case details, the incident occurred on 22 March 2002. The victim was taking her 8-year-old cousin to a toilet located behind their house. As they reached the northwest corner of the property, Sujan grabbed the victim from behind and dragged her behind the house. Julhas and Mohammad were already waiting there and they raped her.
Before fleeing, they threatened her to ensure she would not disclose the incident to anyone. The victim later filed a gang rape case at Nawabganj Police Station.
SI SM Miraj Al Mahmud submitted the chargesheet against the accused on 18 July 2002.
The tribunal then framed charges and ordered the trial to proceed. During the trial, the tribunal recorded the testimonies of seven witnesses before reaching its verdict.
