Road Transport and Bridges Minister Shaikh Rabiul  Alam said Bangladesh will reduce road traffic deaths and injuries by 50 percent by 2030.

A press release received in Dhaka on Tuesday said the minister made the pledge while addressing the United Nations High Level Meeting on Road Safety at the UN Headquarters on Monday.

The minister said Bangladesh is implementing a range of legal, policy, and technology based initiatives to strengthen road safety in line with the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021 to 2030.

He said the government is expanding artificial intelligence based speed management systems, ensuring rapid emergency response after road crashes, and implementing targeted safety measures on highways, particularly to enhance pedestrian safety.

The minister said, “In line with the Safe System Approach and international best practices, the government is committed to finalizing, approving, and enacting a comprehensive Road Safety Act by December 2027.”

Describing road safety as a national political priority, the minister said, “Strong political commitment, effective partnerships, and shared responsibility are essential to achieving the 2030 targets.” He also expressed Bangladesh’s firm commitment to working closely with the international community to build a safe, sustainable, and inclusive road system for all road users.

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Shaikh Rabiul  Alam is leading the Bangladesh delegation at the United Nations High Level Meeting on Road Safety at the UN Headquarters. Other members of the delegation include Road Transport and Highways Division Secretary Dr. Mohammad Ziaul Haque, Bangladesh Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, and Bangladesh Road Safety Project Director Mohammad Shabbir Hasan Khan.

On Tuesday, the minister will serve as co-chair of the side event titled ‘Strengthening Multisectoral Coordination for Road Safety: Sharing Best Practices and Experiences from Countries That Have Successfully Reduced Road Traffic Deaths and Injuries,’ to be held at the UN Headquarters.
