Police suspect that Furkan Mia, the main accused in the killing of his wife, three children, and brother-in-law in Kapasia upazila of Gazipur, may have jumped into the Padma Bridge.
The information was shared by the district police superintendent during a press conference held on Thursday at the Superintendent of Police’s office.
He said that, based on mobile phone data and CCTV footage analysis, police believe Furkan may have jumped into the river from the bridge. However, the matter is still under investigation.
According to the Superintendent of Police, Md. Sharif Uddin, on May 11, a mobile phone belonging to Furkan was found in the possession of a truck helper in Meherpur Sadar. During interrogation, the helper said he found the phone from the middle section of the Padma Bridge.
Police later visited the site with him. CCTV footage from the bridge shows a man getting out of a private car at 6:42 am on May 11. The man is seen leaving behind a mobile phone and a bag before jumping into the Padma River. The truck helper later picked up the phone, though the bag was not found. The body of the person who allegedly jumped has not yet been recovered.
The footage was shown to the complainant and relatives of both families, but none could confirm whether the person in the video was Furkan. Search operations are still ongoing to recover the body and trace him.
Police’s initial assessment suggests that after killing five members of his family, Furkan may have committed suicide by jumping from the Padma Bridge. His home is in Meri Gopinathpur village in Gopalganj Sadar.
The incident occurred on Saturday in the ground-floor residence of a rented house in Rautkona village, Kapasia, owned by expatriate Md. Monir Hossain. Furkan had been living there with his family for about five years and worked as a private car driver.
On Saturday morning, the bodies of Furkan’s wife Sharmin Akter (30), daughters Meem Khanom (15), Umme Habiba (8), Faria (2), and brother-in-law Rasel Mia (22) were found inside the house.
Preliminary police investigation suggests the murders took place late Friday night. On Saturday morning, Furkan reportedly informed both his wife’s family and his own relatives about the killings over the phone before disappearing.
Police suspect domestic conflict and disputes with in-laws may have led to the killings. A murder case was filed on Saturday night by Sharmin’s father, Shahadat, at Kapasia Police Station, naming Furkan and four to five unidentified individuals as accused.
