The Ministry of Law has appointed a state-funded defense lawyer for the accused in the case involving the rape and murder of child Ramisa Akter in Pallabi, Dhaka. Advocate Musa Kalimullah, a member of the Dhaka District Bar Association, has been appointed as defense counsel for the accused.
The information was disclosed on Sunday through an official notification signed by Senior Assistant Secretary (GP-PP) of the Law and Justice Division Md. Faruk Hossain.
Earlier in the afternoon, the investigating officer of the case, Sub-Inspector Ohiduzzaman of Pallabi Police Station, submitted a charge sheet against two accused. The charge sheet named Sohel Rana and his wife Swapna Akter as defendants. Metropolitan Magistrate Ashraful Haque accepted the charge sheet and ordered the case to be transferred for trial. Later, Judge Masrur Saleheen of the Dhaka Children Violence Prevention Tribunal took cognizance of the charges and set June 1 for the charge-framing hearing.
According to the case details, Ramisa left her home at around 9:30 am on May 19. At that time, accused Sohel Rana allegedly lured her into a room on the third floor of a five-storey building. Around 10:30 am, while the family was searching for her to send her to school, her mother found her shoes outside the accused’s room. After receiving no response despite repeated calls, she entered the room along with other residents of the building.
At that time, the decapitated body of Ramisa was found lying in the bedroom of Sohel Rana and Swapna Akter. Her head was found in a bucket nearby. Swapna Akter was present at the scene.
On the day of the incident, the child’s father, Abdul Hannan Mollah, filed a case at Pallabi Police Station naming two accused. Police first arrested Swapna Akter, followed by Sohel Rana, who was arrested from Fatullah in Narayanganj. The following day, May 20, the prime accused gave a confessional statement in court. On the same day, the court sent his wife Swapna to jail.
