Arrest warrants issued against 34, including former Rajshahi mayor Liton

International Crimes Tribunal 2 has issued arrest warrants against 34 people, including former Rajshahi City Corporation Mayor A. H. M. Khairuzzaman Liton, in a case filed over crimes against humanity committed in Rajshahi during the July Mass Uprising.
The tribunal issued the order Tuesday after taking cognizance of the formal charges submitted by the prosecution in the case.
Earlier, on July 30, the prosecution of the International Crimes Tribunal submitted formal charges against 38 people in the case. As four of them are already in custody, the tribunal issued arrest warrants against the remaining 34.
The 34 accused in the case, including Khairuzzaman Liton, former Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Commissioner Biplab Bijoy Talukder and former Officer in Charge of Boalia Police Station Humayun Kabir, are absconding.
Meanwhile, four accused in the case, including former Rajshahi 3 constituency lawmaker Asaduzzaman Asad and Rajshahi Metropolitan Awami League General Secretary Dablu Sarker, whose party’s activities are currently banned, are in custody. They have been ordered to be produced before Tribunal 2 on August 23.
Tribunal prosecutor Faruk Ahammad told journalists that two protesters, Raihan Ali and Anjum Sakib, were killed in Rajshahi during the July Mass Uprising. Many others were seriously injured. The case was filed over these crimes against humanity.
