In a brazen, film-style public shooting, the top reward-listed terrorist Khandaker Naim Ahmed Titon (55) was killed in the busy New Market area of the capital.
Titon was a brother-in-law of another notorious criminal, Sanjidul Islam Emon. This underworld-shaking murder occurred on Tuesday evening, leaving the police initially without any immediate clues. However, multiple sources within the criminal world suggest this was a premeditated assassination carried out to avenge the murder of Sayeed Ahmed Tipu, the brother of thr former Army Chief, Aziz Ahmed.
To execute the killing mission, Badal, also known as "Killer Badal" from Mohammadpur, reportedly arrived in Dhaka from Dubai a month ago. The murder plan was allegedly masterminded from Dubai by Joseph Ahmed, another reward-listed top terrorist and brother of the former Army Chief.
According to eyewitnesses, darkness had just set in, though the Battala area near New Market was still lit by streetlights. Titon was walking briskly through the area when a member of the hit squad, arriving on a motorcycle and skilled in using weapons with both hands, fired two rounds at him. Subsequently, a masked gunman ran closer and fired two more rounds. As Titon collapsed on the street under the hail of bullets, the assassin held a gun to his head and fired once more to ensure his death. The attackers then fled on a motorcycle. Titon's lifeless body was recovered and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors pronounced him dead at around 8:30 PM.
An eyewitness named Ratan, a teenager, said the entire incident happened in the blink of an eye. The assassins took barely a minute to carry out the murder and escape. When bystanders screamed during the incident, the attackers fired a blank shot into the air before the gunman hopped onto the back of the waiting motorcycle, which sped off toward the BGB gate. With the help of locals, Titon was rushed to the hospital.
Sub-Inspector Md. Faruk of the DMCH police outpost confirmed that Titon's body bore several bullet wounds in the hand, torso, and head.
Multiple sources within the criminal underworld reveal that Titon’s name was high on the list of the 23 "most wanted" top terrorists for whom the government announced rewards in 2005. Titon was directly involved in the 1999 brutal murder of Sayeed Ahmed Tipu, the brother of former Army Chief Aziz Ahmed, who was killed in a brushfire shooting inside a moving vehicle in the Nikunja area of Airport Road. Titon served a long prison sentence for that murder and was released from jail during the tenure of the interim government. His brother-in-law, another top terrorist Sanjidul Islam Emon, was also released; while Emon fled the country, Titon remained in Bangladesh.
Another source claims that top terrorist Joseph Ahmed had targeted Titon since his release. Planning from Dubai to avenge his brother's murder, Joseph reportedly sent his associate and a key member of his "killer squad," Badal (alias Killer Badal), back to Bangladesh a month ago. Upon his return, Badal allegedly worked as a "laborer" to keep a close watch on Titon’s movements.
After the former Army Chief's tenure ended, Joseph moved to Dubai, and Badal—a resident of Mohammadpur—followed him there. Multiple sources indicate that Badal was sent back specifically to orchestrate this assassination, and the killing mission was carried out under his direct supervision.
When asked about the incident, Md. Ayub, the Inspector (Investigation) of New Market Police Station, stated, "Miscreants shot a man in the Battala area near New Market. We saw a significant amount of blood at the scene. The victim was taken to Dhaka Medical College, where the duty doctor pronounced him dead. We later learned the deceased was the top terrorist Titon."
However, the officer could not yet confirm the official motive behind the assassination.
