Thirteen people, including 12 primary school students and one female guardian, were hospitalized in Bagerhat on Tuesday after eating unapproved packaged chips. One student was later transferred to a higher-level medical facility after their condition worsened.
The incident occurred Tuesday afternoon after the students purchased the chips from a shop next to Boro Durgapur Dakshinpara Government Primary School in Rampal. Shortly after eating the snacks, the children began experiencing stomach pain, vomiting, and other symptoms of illness.
Local residents rushed the victims to Maitree Hospital at the Rampal Power Plant for treatment.
Residents said the students developed symptoms of suspected food poisoning one after another after consuming the unapproved chips, sparking concern throughout the area.
Dr. Sakib Rezwan, a medical officer at Maitree Hospital, said all 13 patients were admitted with symptoms consistent with food poisoning.
"Twelve patients are receiving treatment and are under observation at Maitree Hospital. One critically ill student has been referred to the Rampal Upazila Health Complex by ambulance for advanced treatment," he said.
The hospitalized students are Prapti Adhikari (10), Tufan Sheikh (13), Rajdeep (10), Akhira (11), Lamia (11), Jannatul (10), Arhi Mondal (5), Rahul Mondal (8), Sristi Biswas (10), Fatema Akter (8), Ambika (6), and Prabhati (10). Their guardian, Dipika Halder (28), was also admitted. Hospital officials said Jannatul remains in critical condition.
