It looks exactly like a pomelo and is almost similar in size as well. However, it is not a pomelo. It is a mango. Due to its appearance, many people initially mistake it for a pomelo, which is why it is locally called the “Jambura mango.” This large-sized mango has now become a centre of curiosity among buyers in the Bandarban markets.
Once known mainly for its hills, waterfalls, and tourism, Bandarban is now gaining a new identity as a district of exotic mango varieties. One of the key producers of these new mango varieties is Toiyo Mru. He is already well known for cultivating dragon fruit alongside mangoes, and among farmers he is now popularly known as “Toiyo Master.”
Each mango produced in his orchard weighs close to one kilogram. In the same garden, some mangoes of the “Brunei King” variety weigh more than two and a half kilograms, selling at a price of 250 taka per kilogram.
