Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) is working to open the Kamalapur station of the MRT Line-6 metro rail system in March next year.
Before that, the company plans to begin trial runs by December this year. Officials believe the launch of Kamalapur station will increase the metro rail’s daily ridership by at least 20 percent.
Currently, 12 train sets operate regularly between Uttara and Motijheel. Work is underway to extend MRT Line-6 from Motijheel to Kamalapur under the project’s third phase. DMTCL said it has already completed nearly 85 percent of the project.
DMTCL officials said the initial target for the Uttara-Motijheel section was to carry 500,000 passengers a day. Once Kamalapur station opens, the metro rail network will establish a direct connection with the country’s largest railway station.
As a result, a large number of passengers traveling on intercity and commuter trains are expected to use the metro rail system. The station will also make commuting easier for residents of Gopibagh, Kamalapur, Manda, and surrounding areas. Officials estimate that daily ridership could increase by at least 20 percent.
Urban expert Adil Muhammad Khan said, “Alongside the opening of Kamalapur station, if metro rail services can eventually operate from 6 a.m. to midnight, daily ridership could exceed the projected target.”
MRT Line-6 Project Director Abdul Wahab said, “Work on power, signaling, mechanical systems, and other components is progressing rapidly. We have already completed nearly 85 percent of the work. We are working with a target of opening Kamalapur station in March next year. Before that, we plan to begin trial runs by December.”
