14 Dead in Lightning Strikes Across Seven Districts

A total of 14 people have been killed by lightning strikes and seasonal Kalbaishakhi (Nor' Wester) storms across various regions of the country. The fatalities occurred on Sunday at different times throughout the day, claiming lives in Gaibandha (5), Thakurgaon (2), Sirajganj (2), Jamalpur (2), Panchagarh (1), Bogura (1), and Natore (1), respectively.
Gaibandha

Five people, including children, died in Gaibandha district on Sunday afternoon. The deceased are: Fuad Chowdhury (10): Son of former UP Chairman Jahangir Hossain, Rafi Chowdhury (15): Son of Choton Mia, Mizan Mia (20): Son of Nobir Hossain. (All three were residents of Dakshin Dhopadanga village in Sundarganj Upazila), Manik Mia (25): Son of Shukur Ali from Deluabari village in Fulchhari Upazila, Nombar Ali (65): A resident of Helancha village of Saghata Upazila.

According to Mokhlesur Rahman Mondal, Chairman of Dhopadanga Union Parishad, the sky turned dark around 4:30 PM followed by thunder, rain, and a storm. Fuad, Rafi, and Mizan were standing on a road near their home when they were struck by lightning and died on the spot. Another person named Shamim was injured and admitted to Gaibandha General Hospital.

In a separate incident in Fulchhari, Manik Mia was struck by lightning while transporting cattle fodder from along a river bank on a horse-drawn cart. He was declared dead upon arrival at the Saghata Upazila Health Complex.

Additionally, in Saghata Upazila, Nombar Ali was struck by lightning while checking on his goats near his house amid rain. He was rushed to the hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
Thakurgaon

Two people died in separate lightning incidents in Thakurgaon on Sunday afternoon. The incidents took place in Niamatpur and Koshadangipara villages of Pirganj Upazila.

The victims have been identified as: Laboni Akter (35): Wife of Rashidul Islam from Niamatpur village, Ilias Ali (37): Son of Akbar Ali from Koshadangipara village.
Local residents reported that intermittent rain had been occurring in Pirganj Upazila and its surrounding areas since Sunday morning. At approximately 1:45 PM, Laboni was returning home after cutting grass for her cattle when she was killed by a sudden lightning strike.

Witnesses in Koshadangipara stated that Ilias had gone to Bairampur area at noon to check on crops in the fields. He was struck by lightning there and died.
Sirajganj

Two people were killed by lightning in the Raiganj and Tarash Upazilas of Sirajganj. These leathal incidents occurred on Sunday afternoon in Mallikchan village of Dhangara Union and Betrashin village of Tarash Upazila.

Police reported that in Mallikchan village, several members of the same family were stacking harvested paddy in a field after seeing clouds in the sky. During this time, Hossain Ali Sheikh (25) was critically injured by a lightning strike. He was pronounced dead after being taken to a local doctor.

In Tarash Upazila, the deceased was identified as Abdul Hamid (50), son of the late Gafur Ali of Betrashin village in Madhainagar Union. Local UP member Md. Shafiqul Islam noted that Abdul Hamid was working in a field near his house during the rain around 3:30 PM when he was struck and killed instantly.
Jamalpur

Two people died and four others were injured in separate lightning incidents in Jamalpur. The deceased are Morjina Begum (22), wife of Mohammad Rajib from the Hazrabari area of Melandah Upazila, and Hasmat Ali (45), son of Habib Mondal from the Char Yatharthapur area of the Sadar Upazila.

The injured individuals are: Shefali Begum (25): Wife of Harun Mia, Anwar Hossain (34): Son of Nur Ali, Md. Shaon Mia (25): Son of Mohammad Ruman Mia.
Sukhi (14): Daughter of Suman Mia.

The injured have been admitted to Jamalpur General Hospital. Md. Mahfuzur Rahman, Assistant Director of the hospital, confirmed the reports.
Panchagarh

A tea garden worker named Md. Sohrawardy (22) was killed by lightning in Atwari Upazila. The incident took place around 7:45 AM on Sunday near a tea garden in the Sonapatila area of Dhamor Union. Two other workers, Md. Mostafa (45) and Jaherul Islam (43), were injured. Mostafa has been admitted to Panchagarh Modern Sadar Hospital.

Sohrawardy, the son of Abdus Samad, had reportedly been married for only eight days.
Citing families and local sources, Khorshed Alam Kuddus, a member of Ward 1 of Dhamor Union Parishad, stated: "In the morning, the three workers were returning home after picking tea leaves from the garden of a farmer named Sher Ali in the Sonapatila area. Sohrawardy died on the spot near the garden due to a sudden lightning strike. The other two workers, who were a short distance away at the time, sustained injuries."
Natore

A paddy harvester named Samrat Hossain (26) was killed by lightning in Singra, Natore. The incident occurred around 5:30 PM on Sunday in Thenga Pakuria village of Dahia Union.

Samrat was the son of Saja Fakir from Nagardala village in Shahjadpur Upazila, Sirajganj. Local residents reported that Samrat and several other workers were transporting harvested paddy to a house belonging to a man named Awal. When the storm began, Samrat put down his load of paddy and took shelter in a nearby house. He was critically injured by a sudden lightning strike. Fellow workers rescued him and took him to the Sadar Hospital, where the duty doctor pronounced him dead.
Bogura

A farmer named Suman (35) died after being struck by lightning in Gabtali Upazila, Bogura. The incident took place on Sunday afternoon in Muchikhali village of Sonaray Union. Suman was the son of Md. Abdul Karim.

Md. Rakib Hasan, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Gabtali Model Thana, stated: "Around 3:45 PM on Sunday, Suman went to a field near his house to bring back his tethered goat. He was struck by lightning as soon as he reached the field and died on the spot. Police visited the scene after receiving the news. An Unnatural Death (UD) case has been filed at the police station regarding this incident."
