Five Bangladeshi nationals were injured in a fire at a hotel in Malviya Nagar, New Delhi, according to the Bangladesh High Commission in Delhi.
In a post on its verified official Facebook page on Wednesday (June 3), the High Commission said that three of the injured are being treated at Max Hospital in Saket, while the remaining two are receiving treatment at Safdarjung Hospital.
Expressing sorrow over the incident, the High Commission said it is maintaining constant contact with the Indian authorities and closely monitoring the condition of the injured.
Earlier on Wednesday morning, the fire broke out at a restaurant located in the basement of the five-storey “Micasa Inn” hotel. The fire spread rapidly throughout the building.
According to a report by Indian news outlet NDTV, more than 40 people were inside the 25-room hotel at the time of the fire. The hotel is located in a narrow lane in the Hauz Rani area of Hauz Khas, Delhi. Most of the occupants were foreign nationals, who, according to locals, had come to India for medical treatment.
Eyewitnesses said that when the fire started, most of the guests were asleep in their rooms. Upon receiving the information, multiple units of the fire service quickly reached the scene and began rescue and firefighting operations.
Local BJP Member of Parliament Satish Upadhyay said that 47 people were rescued, while 21 people lost their lives.
Officials stated that among the 21 deceased, 17 were foreign nationals, most of whom were citizens of Liberia, Nigeria, Mozambique, and Bangladesh.
