After Power, Mamata Loses Her Party

After losing power, Mamata Banerjee has now effectively lost control of her party as well. Her long-built administrative base is now under the control of Suvendu Adhikari. The humiliating election results have forced her to accept defeat. Her last remaining stronghold was her own party, the Trinamool Congress.
But even that appears to be collapsing under the influence of the Modi wave, which calls for weakening regional forces. Within just one month, the Trinamool Congress has been thrown into disarray. Like the banks of the Ganges breaking apart, the party is said to be falling to pieces. The cracks first became visible on Monday, and within a day the situation worsened rapidly.
Before she could recover or regroup, the final blow arrived on Wednesday. In front of her eyes, she witnessed what was described as her political downfall. Party members began leaving her side one after another. A total of 58 MLAs reportedly defected. There are also claims that more defections may follow in the coming days. Over a hundred councillors had already left earlier. Only 80 MLAs remained, but even that support has now collapsed.
Once a dominant leader who shaped West Bengal politics for decades, Mamata Banerjee now finds herself politically weakened and isolated. The Trinamool Congress, her life’s political creation has entered a severe internal crisis. From breaking away from the Congress to forming a new party, defeating the Left Front, and becoming the central figure in state politics, her journey defined an era. But today, that very party faces its biggest internal breakdown.
The crisis deepened after rebel leader Ritivratta Banerjee was recognised as the Leader of the Opposition with majority support in the assembly, effectively shifting control away from Mamata’s camp. He submitted the backing of 58 MLAs to Speaker Ratinath Bose, who later acknowledged the claim and granted him the post.
Ritivratta Banerjee has stated that his faction now holds the majority in the legislative party. The rebel group has also announced key appointments, naming Akhruzzaman as Chief Whip, along with Javed Khan, Shiuli Saha, Sabina Yasmin, and Sandipan Saha in important organisational roles.
