Police have completed the investigation into a widely discussed child rape case in Bakalia, Chattogram, in just 13 days. The charge sheet will be submitted to the court on Thursday (June 4), confirmed Bakalia Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Solaiman.
Speaking to Agamir Somoy, OC Mohammad Solaiman said that, following approval from senior officials of the Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP), the decision to submit the charge sheet to the court’s prosecution branch has been finalized.
The investigation officer, Bakalia Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Tanvir Ahmed, said that Monir’s involvement has been confirmed through DNA test reports. He has been named as the sole accused in the charge sheet.
According to the investigation report, the victim was subjected to sexual abuse with intent to commit rape, which is treated as rape under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
Inspector Tanvir further stated that Section 9(1) of the amended 2026 Women and Children Repression Prevention Act provides that if a person has sexual contact with a child under 16 years of age, with or without consent it is legally considered rape.
Upon receiving the news, the Bakalia police arrived at the scene and took Monir into custody. However, trouble erupted when they attempted to transport him to the station. A mob surrounded the police, demanding that the suspect be handed over to them so they could deliver vigilante justice.
This led to violent clashes between the police and the public, involving chases and counter-chases, brickbat throwing, baton charges, gunfire, and the vandalism and torching of a police vehicle, turning the Bakalia area into a veritable battlefield.
The following morning, on May 22, the child's father filed a case against Monir at the Bakalia Police Station. Monir subsequently gave a confessional statement in court admitting his guilt, after which he was sent to jail.
