Close Mamata aide Ashis Banerjee found hanging at TMC office

The body of Ashis Banerjee, former Deputy Speaker of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly and a senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader, was recovered on Sunday morning from the party's office adjacent to his home in Rampurhat town, Birbhum district. Police confirmed that the body has been sent for post-mortem examination.
Banerjee was widely regarded as a close confidant of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the TMC supremo. During her tenure as chief minister, he held the post of Deputy Speaker of the Assembly. A five-time MLA from Rampurhat, he lost his seat in this year's state elections to BJP candidate Dhruv Saha.
Ashis lived in the Hattalapara area of Rampurhat. As news of his death spread, a large crowd gathered outside the TMC office where his body was found.
Earlier in his political career, Ashis Banerjee had also served as the state's Minister for Education and Agriculture during Mamata Banerjee's first term in power.
