Former US President Joe Biden on Saturday called President Donald Trump a ‘loser,’ accusing him of narcissism, arrogance and blatant corruption during a speech at a Maryland Democratic Party gala.
Speaking at a casino event organized by the state Democratic Party ahead of November’s midterm elections, Biden sharply criticized Trump, accusing him of deliberately undermining and weakening the NATO alliance.
Recalling several of Trump’s actions, Biden claimed Trump demolished part of the White House’s East Wing to build a ballroom, placed his own name on the Kennedy Center, planned to construct an arch in his honor and hired workers from his private pool contractor to repair the reflecting pool at the Lincoln Memorial.
“Wow, what a loser,” Biden said sarcastically.
Biden was referring to a $14 million Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool renovation project that reportedly deteriorated soon after completion because of algae buildup. According to Biden, the contract was awarded without a competitive bidding process to a company that had previously worked on Trump’s golf club pool.
The former president also accused the Trump administration of being more corrupt than any previous administration in US history, claiming Trump has earned hundreds of millions of dollars since returning to the White House.
Biden also criticized plans by the Trump administration to compensate individuals involved in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, arguing they should have received lengthy prison sentences instead of financial compensation.
Despite his criticism of Trump, Biden’s own performance during the June 2024 presidential debate against Trump drew widespread scrutiny. Concerns over his age and physical condition had already been growing, and during the debate he appeared confused at times and repeatedly lost his train of thought.
Within days of the debate, Democratic lawmakers publicly urged Biden to withdraw from the presidential race. He stepped aside the following month and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, who later lost the election to Trump.
