Scott Pelley, journalist and presenter of the highly popular U.S. television program 60 Minutes, has reportedly been dismissed by CBS News. His contract was terminated following criticism of CBS News Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss.
According to two sources working at the television network, the matter was confirmed to Reuters on Tuesday. 60 Minutes is the longest-running prime-time show in the United States.
In an email sent to Pelley, the program’s executive producer Nick Bilton wrote: “Your hostility regarding the future of the program has become extremely evident, and I have heard your concerns. Therefore, on behalf of CBS News, I am informing you that your employment is being terminated immediately for cause.”
Pelley was reportedly fired after accusing Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss of “killing” the program.
In a note addressed to other staff members of the show, Bilton said the network had severed ties with Pelley.
Pelley is the latest addition to a list of more than half a dozen employees who have either been dismissed or resigned from the channel in recent weeks.
Earlier, CBS had also dismissed former executive producer Tania Simon and journalists Sharyn Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega.
