Game of Thrones actor Tom Chadbon dies at 80

Veteran British actor Tom Chadbon, renowned for his extensive work in television and film including Doctor Who and Game of Thrones, has died at the age of 80.
The Luton-born performer maintained a prolific career that spanned nearly five decades and included a role in Daniel Craig’s first James Bond outing, Casino Royale. Fantom Events, a publishing and events company that collaborated with the actor, confirmed his passing last weekend through a social media announcement.
One of his most celebrated roles occurred in 1979 when he starred opposite Tom Baker as the private detective Duggan in the Doctor Who serial City of Death.
This Paris-based story, which Douglas Adams co-wrote and featured a cameo by John Cleese, remains the most-watched episode in the history of the long-running series with more than 16 million viewers.
Chadbon’s involvement with the Doctor Who franchise continued in 1986 when he played Merdeen in The Mysterious Planet opposite Colin Baker. Throughout his career, he secured supporting roles in various popular programs such as Peep Show, The Bill, Midsomer Murders, and Where the Heart Is.
In 1997, he joined a distinguished cast including Charles Dance, Diana Rigg, and Emilia Fox for the ITV adaptation of Rebecca. Between 2008 and 2011, he became a regular fixture on the series Casualty, portraying Henry Williams, the hospital’s director of critical care.
His final television appearance took place in 2017 during the finale of the seventh season of Game of Thrones, where he played the character High Septon Maynard.
Expressing their grief, Fantom Events said, “He was always a warm and friendly man to work with and we send our condolences to his family at this sad time.”
