Hollywood director Mark Rydell dies at 97

Mark Rydell, one of the most successful and influential filmmakers of Hollywood's golden era, has passed away. The celebrated director breathed his last on Friday at the age of 97.

Rydell achieved global fame with the 1981 classic On Golden Pond, widely regarded as one of the greatest films of all time. His outstanding contributions to both directing and acting earned him multiple Academy Award nominations.

The news of his death was confirmed through an emotional Instagram post by renowned American actress and singer Bette Midler, who made her film debut under Rydell's direction. Paying tribute to her mentor, she wrote: "Mark Rydell, the director of my first movie The Rose, left us this morning. Before becoming a renowned director, he was a first-rate actor. I consider myself fortunate to have worked with him. He taught me how to act in The Rose and For the Boys. I owe both of my Oscar nominations entirely to him. He had an extraordinary ability to tell actors in just a few words exactly what they needed on set."

Though Rydell began his career in television, he transitioned to the big screen in the late 1960s. The crowning achievement of his career, however, came with the 1981 family drama On Golden Pond. The film was both a commercial blockbuster and a critical darling, earning Rydell a Best Director Oscar nomination, along with several other nods.

The movie marked the final screen appearance of the ailing legendary actor Henry Fonda, who won his first and only Oscar for his performance. Fonda shared the screen with his real-life daughter Jane Fonda and the iconic Katharine Hepburn, who made history by securing her record-breaking fourth Academy Award for the role.

Born Mortimer H. Rydell in New York, he studied at the Juilliard School of Music. In his early years, he worked as a jazz pianist to make ends meet while pursuing theatre.

After launching his career as a television actor, Rydell went on to cement his name as one of Hollywood's most successful directors throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

Rydell's passing has cast a pall of sorrow over the entertainment world. Film connoisseurs agree that with his departure, Hollywood has lost one of its finest storytellers.
