Sony and Marvel’s latest cinematic venture, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, has shattered box office expectations by collecting a staggering $355 million from 4,487 North American theaters.

The achievement represents the second-largest domestic debut in history, trailing only the $357 million record of 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. With this release, Marvel Studios now holds the four largest domestic openings of all time, surpassing previous hits like Spider-Man: No Way Home and Avengers: Infinity War.

On the global stage, the film secured $573 million, bringing its worldwide total to a remarkable $927 million.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the production cost Sony approximately $225 million, excluding marketing expenses. The film has received euphoric praise, earning a 90 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and an “A” grade from CinemaScore.

Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige celebrated the success, saying, “This is a truly phenomenal opening, and we are grateful to audiences everywhere for coming out and experiencing our film the way it was meant to be seen.”

He added, “This debut reflects the enduring power of Marvel’s characters, and the connection they continue to have with fans around the world - and, as audiences saw, it sets up exciting things to come.”

The film’s triumph follows a period of “superhero fatigue” seen in disappointments like The Marvels, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and Captain America: Brave New World. Analyst Jeff Bock of Exhibitor Relations noted that audiences wanted a fresh start from overly connected storylines.

Brand New Day served as this reset, addressing the cliffhanger from No Way Home regarding Tom Holland’s Peter Parker. Demand was so intense that some theaters scheduled screenings every 15 minutes to accommodate fans eager to see the ramifications of Spider-Man’s choices and the debut of Sadie Sink.

Despite lacking Imax screens due to Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, the film set new records for Dolby, 4DX, and ScreenX. Sony’s chair Tom Rothman said, “‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is fundamentally a movie about friendship, about the balm of connection in all our lives, and that is resonant to audiences of all ages.”

Tom Holland, now 30, continues to see his series improve at the box office, even as a succession plan is discussed for his character.

Meanwhile, The Odyssey has surpassed $911 million globally, joining Toy Story 5, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and Michael as top earners this year. Paul Dergarabedian of Rentrak concluded that these results significantly increase the likelihood of a $10 billion year for Hollywood.
