The announcement from which there was no turning back

Street protests had been boiling over for more than a month. The movement, which initially began with the demand for quota reforms, had already transformed into a bloody conflict.

Amid consecutive deaths, arrests, allegations of enforced disappearances, and severe repression, the country's political reality was shifting rapidly. It was in such a moment, on August 3, 2024, that the "one-point demand" was declared from the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital. That declaration fundamentally altered the character of the movement. The demand was no longer confined to quota reform; the ultimate objective became a change of government.

According to political observers, the announcement on August 3 was the most crucial turning point of the July Mass Uprising. Up until that point, the movement had revolved around specific demands, but on that day, it took a definitive political turn. In effect, the possibilities for dialogue, compromise, or partial solutions came to an end that day.

The day had started with a different signal. In the morning, during a meeting with leaders of the Professional Coordination Council at Gono Bhaban, then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina called on the protesting students to sit for talks. She said, "The doors of Gono Bhaban are open for them." However, a few hours later, in front of hundreds of thousands of people gathered at the Shaheed Minar, Nahid Islam, one of the key coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, rejected that call. Around 5:30 PM, speaking through the microphone to the gathered crowd, Nahid said, "To ensure the safety of human lives and establish justice in society, we have reached the decision of a one-point demand. The one-point demand is the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and this government, and the abolition of fascism."

Laying out a framework, he stated, "From the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, we will very soon announce a united front for a student-people uprising, joining hands with citizens from all walks of life, student organizations, and professionals of all occupations. Through discussions with everyone, we will present a national outline for the future Bangladesh."

Nahid further said, "Not only Sheikh Hasina, but the entire cabinet and government must resign. This fascist system of governance must be abolished. We want to form a Bangladesh, we want to create a political arrangement, where no form of autocracy or fascism can ever return."

The Shaheed Minar that day was not merely a rally site; it was a stage where anger, grief, and resolve converged. Braving the rain since morning, people gathered from various parts of the capital. Teachers, parents, lawyers, doctors, artists, laborers, and citizens from diverse walks of life joined the students. A sea of people stretched from the Shaheed Minar to Doyel Chattar, the Dhaka Medical College Hospital area, and the Jagannath Hall intersection. The entire area echoed with chants: "One point, one demand," "My brother is in the grave, why is the killer outside?", "Justice, we want justice."

Reaching this stage was the result of consecutive weeks of intense conflict. The movement that began on July 1 took a new turn after an attack on students at Dhaka University on July 15. The following day, the martyrdom of Abu Sayeed in Rangpur sparked widespread protests across the nation. Subsequently, a series of clashes, loss of lives, arrests, and allegations of state crackdowns reinforced the conviction among the protesters that achieving their demands alone would no longer resolve the crisis. The core issue of state accountability and political change moved directly to the forefront.
Even though a 9-point demand was announced on July 19, the situation quickly became more complex. The detention of movement coordinators, pressure to withdraw programs, and mounting tension on the streets created the need to reconsider the movement's strategy. On August 2, a new slogan spread across social media: "Drop the 9 points, call for the one-point demand." The very next day, that slogan turned into an official political declaration.

Alongside the one-point demand, Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, one of the key coordinators of the movement, outlined various directives for a comprehensive non-cooperation movement. The leadership believed that through public-driven non-cooperation, it would be possible to exert enough pressure on the state structure to narrow down any alternative political solutions.

Political analyst Dr. Ainul Islam told Agamir Somoy, "The declaration of the one-point demand was the expression of the movement's political culmination. Through this announcement, the participation of people from various walks of life broadened further, giving the movement new momentum."

According to Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and former advisor to the interim government, after prolonged repression, the one-point declaration became the call of the hour and a reflection of public opinion on the streets. The students and general public were eager for the one-point demand at that time. There was no scope for engaging in any dialogue. "We entered a 'do or die' situation. Although we had already drifted into a movement to overthrow the government before this, that day was the final call," he noted.

Detailing the background of the historic announcement, Nahid, Convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP), said, "The historic one-point demand was not announced on behalf of any single individual, organization, or political party. On that day, the one-point demand was declared on behalf of the people of Bangladesh—on behalf of the uprising students and citizens of Bangladesh. Therefore, the true announcers of the one-point demand are the people of Bangladesh, the uprising students and citizens, and our martyred brothers and sisters."
