Hundreds of people took to the streets in Bakolia, Chattogram city, following allegations of rape of a three-year-old child. Police have arrested the accused, but locals surrounded law enforcement officers and staged protests, demanding that the suspect be handed over to them.
From around 3:30 pm on Thursday, police struggled to control the protesters in the Char Chaktai Nur Chairman Ghat area of Bakolia.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Kishore Majumdar of Bakolia Police Station, who was present at the scene, told Agamir Somoy that they received allegations of rape involving a three-year-old child at a building named Bismillah Mansion on Abu Zafar Road in Char Chaktai. Police quickly went to the location and arrested the accused.
He said, “People had already gathered in front of the building and were protesting before we arrived. After we reached the scene and rescued the accused from the besieged building, we have not been able to leave. The situation is now very tense. People are extremely angry. However, the arrested individual is safe in our custody.”
Additional police have been deployed at the scene. Authorities are attempting to disperse the angry crowd and transfer the accused to the police station, officials from Bakolia Police Station said.
