Although all major rivers in the country are currently flowing below danger levels, there is a possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the upstream and various regions of the country over the next few days. As a result, water levels in several rivers may rise rapidly. In particular, some low-lying areas of Sylhet, Sunamganj, Netrokona, Mymensingh, and Sherpur districts are at risk of temporary flooding.

Emon Kalyan Das, Assistant Engineer at the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre, provided this information to media today (Thursday).

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre said water levels in several rivers are rising due to heavy rainfall in different parts of the country and rainfall in upstream areas of India's Meghalaya, Assam, and West Bengal. However, all major rivers in the country are still flowing below danger levels.

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre stated that water levels in the rivers of the northern and northeastern regions may rise further over the next few days. Among these, some low-lying areas of Sylhet, Sunamganj, Netrokona, Mymensingh, and Sherpur districts are at risk of temporary flooding.

According to the centre's latest forecast, heavy to very heavy rainfall occurred in the Rangpur, Sylhet, and Mymensingh divisions over the past 24 hours. During the same period, moderate to heavy rainfall occurred in Meghalaya. Over the next five days, there is a possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall again in the Rangpur, Sylhet, and Mymensingh divisions of the country, as well as in adjacent Indian states of West Bengal, Assam, and Meghalaya.

Water Rising in Surma-Kushiyara

The water level of the Surma River in the northeastern region has risen over the past 24 hours. This trend may continue for the next three days. On the other hand, while the water level of the Kushiyara River has decreased slightly, it may remain stable for the next day and then rise over the following two days.

Additionally, the Kushiyara River is currently flowing at the warning level at the Fenchuganj point in Sylhet. In the coming days, the Surma and Kushiyara rivers may touch the warning level at various points in Sylhet and Sunamganj. This could lead to temporary flooding in some areas of the low-lying regions adjacent to the rivers.

Upward Trend in Brahmaputra-Jamuna

Water levels in the rivers of the Brahmaputra-Jamuna basin have risen over the past 24 hours. Water levels may remain nearly stable for the next day. After that, there is a possibility of water levels rising for four consecutive days. However, the forecast states that the rivers will remain below danger levels during this period.

Meanwhile, water levels in the rivers of the Ganges-Padma basin are currently stable. This condition may persist for the next five days.
Teesta Near Warning Level

Water levels in the Teesta and Dudhkumar rivers in the Rangpur division have risen. The water level of the Dharla River remains stable. Currently, the Teesta River is flowing at the warning level at the Dalia point in Nilphamari. Due to heavy to very heavy rainfall expected over the next three days, water levels in the Teesta, Dharla, and Dudhkumar rivers may rise further. During this time, the Teesta River may flow near or at the warning level at various points in Lalmonirhat and Nilphamari districts.

Additionally, the Karatoa, Atrai, Tangon, Punarbhaba, and Ghaghat rivers in the Rangpur region are also flowing below danger levels. The water levels of these rivers are likely to remain fairly stable over the next few days.

Someshwari at Warning Level in Netrokona

Water levels in the Someshwari, Kangsha, and Jinjiram rivers in the Mymensingh division have risen. In contrast, the water level of the Bhugai River has decreased slightly. Currently, the Someshwari River is flowing at the warning level at the Kalmakanda point in Netrokona. There is a possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall in this region over the next three days. As a result, water levels in the rivers of the Someshwari, Kangsha, Jinjiram, and Bhugai basins may rise further. This could cause temporary waterlogging and flooding in some low-lying areas adjacent to rivers in Netrokona, Mymensingh, and Sherpur districts.

Rivers Around Dhaka Normal

Water levels in the Buriganga, Dhaleshwari, Turag, and Tongi Khal are currently stable, and all are flowing below danger levels. The centre has stated that although water levels may rise slightly over the next three days, there is no risk of flooding.

Monitoring in Chattogram and Sylhet

Water levels in the Sarigowain and Jadukata rivers in the Sylhet division have risen. Due to heavy to very heavy rainfall expected over the next three days, water levels in these rivers may rise further.

Water levels in the Selonia, Halda, Sangu, and Matamuhuri rivers in the Chattogram division have risen. However, water levels in the Muhuri, Feni, and Gumti rivers have decreased somewhat. Water levels in these rivers are likely to remain fairly stable over the next three days. Although, if rainfall amounts are higher in some areas, the possibility of localized water level increases cannot be ruled out.

Relief in the Western Region

The Garai and Mathabhanga rivers in the Khulna region, as well as the Atrai, Mahananda, Karatoa, and Jamuneshwari rivers in the Rajshahi region, are still flowing well below danger levels. Although light to moderate rainfall is forecast in these areas over the next few days, there is no significant risk of river water levels rising notably.

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre has stated that special attention must be paid to the situation in the rivers of the northern and northeastern regions over the coming days. However, no flood risk is currently observed in any major rivers of the country. The possibility of temporary flooding in some low-lying areas of the Sylhet-Sunamganj and Mymensingh regions remains the biggest concern at present.
