The United Nations will posthumously award the "Dag Hammarskjöld Medal" to six brave Bangladeshi peacekeepers who lost their lives while serving on duty to uphold world peace. The medals will be conferred by UN Secretary-General António Guterres at a special ceremony on June 5 at the UN headquarters in New York, marking the International Day of UN Peacekeepers.
This year, a total of 68 military, police, and civilian peacekeepers who lost their lives while serving worldwide are being posthumously awarded the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal. Among them, 59 died last year while serving in various peacekeeping missions. The list includes six Bangladeshi peacekeepers.
The Bangladeshi peacekeepers set to receive the honor are: Private Md. Jahangir Alam, Private Md. Sobuj Mia, Corporal Md. Masud Rana, Private Md. Mominul Islam, Private Shamim Reza, and Private Shanto Mondal.
These peacekeepers were serving with the United Nations Interim Security Force for the Abyei region (UNISFA). They were killed in a sudden drone attack on December 13, 2025.
In recognition of their sacrifices for establishing world peace, the UN awards this prestigious medal each year to peacekeepers who die while serving. This recognition of the six Bangladeshi peacekeepers is regarded as yet another significant acknowledgment of the country's contributions to international peacekeeping operations.
