The US Embassy in Dhaka has issued a warning about scams conducted through fake social media profiles using the identities of American diplomats.

The message called on everyone to remain cautious about such suspicious or fraudulent communications online.

The information was shared in a post on the US Embassy's official Facebook page on Tuesday (September 15).

In its message, the embassy said that no official or employee of the US Embassy will ever ask anyone online for money, gift cards, or personal financial information (such as bank account or card numbers).

In its guidance to protect against fraud, the embassy said: One. If anyone contacts you claiming to be a US diplomat and asks for money or information, do not respond. Two. Do not carry out any financial transaction in the face of any temptation or request.

The US Embassy particularly urged the general public to remain aware of such fake IDs and not fall into the traps of scammers.
