Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said that no fascist or authoritarian force should ever again be able to use police personnel in Bangladesh against the country and the freedom of its people. Standing on this soil, stained with police blood in the very first moments of independence, he called on everyone to renew their commitment with a fresh oath.
He made these remarks on Sunday morning while speaking as the chief guest at the parade ceremony organized on the occasion of Police Week at the Rajarbagh Police Lines ground in the capital.
At the annual parade ceremony, the Prime Minister recalled the movements and struggles of the past. He said that after more than a decade and a half of continuous anti-fascist movements and struggles, the bloody mass uprising of students and the public in 2024 paved the way for the current government, formed through the people’s vote, reflecting the aspirations of freedom-loving, democracy-seeking citizens of the country.
“For years, countless people were victims of attacks, cases, repression, and deprivation of rights. Under the present democratic government, they want peace and security,” Tarique Rahman said, addressing the police.
“You must try with all your ability and capacity to ensure the safety of people’s lives and property. This is what the government expects from you,” the Prime Minister added.
The Prime Minister praised the role of the police in the thirteenth national parliamentary election. He said that the election proved that the Bangladesh Police are capable of performing their duties with efficiency and professionalism.
“Not only at home, but Bangladesh Police are also continuing to work with efficiency and a good reputation in United Nations peacekeeping missions,” he said.
Earlier, the Prime Minister inaugurated Police Week 2026 by reviewing the colorful ceremonial march of the annual police parade.
The theme of this year’s Police Week is “My Police, My Country, Bangladesh First.” Various programs of Police Week, which began today, will continue until May 13.
The Prime Minister reviewed and received the salute from the disciplined, visually impressive, and colorful parade by various police contingents and flag-bearing teams. He inspected the parade and accepted the salute while riding in an open jeep.
The annual police parade this year was led by Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Hasan Mohammad Naser Rikabdar as the parade commander.
This is the first Police Week during a BNP-led government after achieving an absolute majority in the thirteenth parliamentary election.
At the beginning of his speech, the Prime Minister paid tribute to the memory of all police personnel who were martyred in the brutal attack carried out by the invading forces under the name of “Operation Searchlight” on sleeping police members at the Rajarbagh Police Lines in 1971.
Remembering the martyred police members, the Prime Minister said that responsibility does not end with remembrance alone. The police personnel who sacrificed their lives for the achievement of Bangladesh’s independence—protecting that independence at any cost is our sacred duty.
