Jubodal leader dies after alleged punch by ‘BNP leader’

A Jubodal leader has died after allegedly being punched by a ‘BNP leader’ in Chattogram city. The incident reportedly occurred over a dispute concerning the placement of mobile rickshaw vans on the road for selling goods.

Police said the incident took place Friday in the Omar Ali Matbar Bari area under Chandgaon Police Station in the city.

The deceased Fazlul Amin was the senior joint secretary of the East Sholashahar Ward Jubodal according to Mohammad Shahed, general secretary of the city committee of the organization.

The victim’s family filed a case with Chandgaon Police Station naming local resident Mohammad Shahjahan and his son Sifat. Five to seven unidentified people were also accused in the case.

Chandgaon Police Station Officer in Charge Jasim Uddin told Agamir Somoy, “At around 11am Friday there was an argument between Shahjahan and Fazlul Amin over a local dispute. We learned that Shahjahan pushed him at that time and Fazlul Amin became ill and died. A case was filed at night. The complaint alleges that Fazlul Amin died after being punched in the chest. We are trying to arrest the accused.”

According to local residents, Shahjahan identifies himself as a BNP leader. He arranged for several vendors to set up rickshaw vans on the road to sell goods in the Omar Ali Matbar Bari area. Fazlul Amin opposed setting up mobile shops in the area. This led to a dispute between the two.

Jubodal leader Mohammad Shahed said, “The incident did not happen over any political dispute. It happened over a local issue. I heard there was pushing and shoving. Fazlul Amin had heart disease.”
