Former Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) candidate Mohammad Rashed Khan has claimed that the cancellation of former DUCSU General Secretary (GS) Golam Rabbani’s position was the result of a complaint he filed against Rabbani. He also asserted that he is now the rightful claimant to the vacant post.
In an immediate reaction to Agamir Somoy on Tuesday morning regarding the cancellation of Rabbani’s GS position, Rashed made the claim.
Recalling the 2019 DUCSU election, he said, “Our panel won 11 positions, including Vice President (VP) and General Secretary (GS). However, I was later declared defeated. The election was marred by widespread irregularities. We had all the relevant evidence, and I was fully confident of winning the GS position.”
“Based on that, I filed an institutional complaint seeking the removal of the candidate who had been declared GS through what I considered an illegitimate process. Following my complaint, the university formed an investigation committee. The committee found evidence supporting allegations of fraud involving Golam Rabbani,” Rashed claimed.
“I later learned that his student status had also been revoked. Since he is no longer recognized as a student, he should not have been holding a DUCSU position either. The administration has now taken that step. This action was taken as a result of my complaint,” he added.
The former leader of Ganodhikar Parishad further said, “With Rabbani’s GS position now vacant, the post remains unoccupied in DUCSU. Since I was his principal rival in the election, I am the rightful claimant to that position. I clearly stated this in my complaint filed in 2029 as well.”
Rashed, who is currently associated with the BNP, said he remains fully optimistic about receiving final justice from the university administration.
In the March 11, 2019 DUCSU election, Nurul Haque Nur was elected Vice President (VP) with 11,062 votes. His closest rival was then Bangladesh Chhatra League President Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon, who received 9,129 votes.
For the General Secretary position, Golam Rabbani was declared the winner with 10,484 votes, while runner-up Rashed Khan secured 6,063 votes.
On Monday, Dhaka University’s Syndicate decided to revoke Golam Rabbani’s position as the 2019 DUCSU General Secretary. If the decision receives final approval from the Syndicate, Rashed Khan could become DUCSU General Secretary seven years after the election.
