Teachers should devote at least five minutes of every class to discussing moral education and social values alongside the regular curriculum, Youth and Sports State Minister and convener of BNP's Dhaka North unit, Aminul Haque, said on Saturday.
Speaking at the annual training workshop of Monipur High School and College in the capital, he said that academic knowledge alone is not enough to build an educated nation.
"Developing humanity, strengthening family bonds and fostering a sense of social responsibility are equally important," he said.
Aminul Haque pointed out that earlier in the day he had attended a reception for outstanding students at a kindergarten school in Rupnagar and distributed sports equipment among 40 educational institutions in Pallabi.
"The incumbent government attaches the highest importance to education," he said. "One of the most important aspects of education is moral instruction and social values. Today's society clearly reflects a shortage in both."
He said many parents now hesitate to communicate openly with their own children, describing the situation as a matter of concern.
"Educational institutions must play the leading role in overcoming this moral decline," he said.
Addressing teachers, Aminul urged them to dedicate at least five minutes of every class to discussions on ethics, family values, respect for elders and civic responsibility.
"Doing so will help the next generation grow into more compassionate and responsible citizens," he said.
Reflecting on changing family structures, he said joint families were once common, with parents, siblings and relatives living together, whereas many people now consider living separately after marriage to be the norm.
"Restoring these family and social values is the need of the time," he added.
Speaking about young people, Aminul said today's youth and Generation Z would lead Bangladesh in the future.
"The government is implementing long-term plans to help them become compassionate, responsible and patriotic citizens," he said.
He also made a light-hearted reference to football during his speech.
"Brazil supporters may be feeling a little disappointed, while Argentina fans are dreaming again," he joked, before wishing supporters of all teams well.
Highlighting the importance of mutual respect, Aminul said people should treat neighbors, relatives, parents and children with dignity and respect.
"If we can instill these values in students, the society of the future will be more humane and compassionate," he said.
Prime Minister's Advisor and BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi attended the event as the chief guest. Dhaka North City Corporation Administrator Md. Shafiqul Islam Khan Milton also addressed the program.
