The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Detective Branch (DB) in Faridpur Sadar Zone has been withdrawn following the death of a 27-year-old man after he was taken into DB custody in Madhukhali upazila.
The deceased Mirza Ishtiaq Ahmed Pranto died at Faridpur Medical College Hospital on June 21, a day after being taken into custody on June 20.
In an official order signed by Faridpur Superintendent of Police Md. Nazrul Islam, DB Sadar Zone OC Syed Md. Alamgir Hossain was withdrawn and attached to the police lines.
The order stated that he has been transferred for ‘administrative reasons’ and instructed to report to Faridpur Police Lines by 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The directive took immediate effect.
However, several sources believe the decision came in the aftermath of the custodial death incident, although the official order did not mention any specific reason.
Faridpur Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance) Fatema Islam said the decision was taken purely on administrative grounds and confirmed that the officer has already been attached to the police lines.
The deceased, Mirza Ishtiak Ahmed Pranto, was a resident of West Gondardia area under Madhukhali municipality and a student of Faridpur Law College.
According to family members, he was detained by DB police on June 20. They alleged that he was beaten in front of his mother during the arrest. He later died while undergoing treatment at Faridpur Medical College Hospital around 7:30 am on June 21.
