The newly launched Special Response Battalion (SRB) has arrested Md. Mujahid (18), the prime accused in the gang rape of two dancers on a boat in the river of Titas of Brahmanbaria.

Mujahid was arrested at his maternal grandfather's house during an operation in the Beanibazar police station area of Sylhet around 11:30 pm on Tuesday (September 15).

The information was confirmed by SRB's media wing at noon on Wednesday (September 16). RAB has gotten dissolved and SRB has started functioning today (Wednesday).

The arrested Mujahid is the son of one Angur Mia of Budda area under Sarail police station in Brahmanbaria.

SRB said that on the night of September 10, Mujahid and his five accomplices took two dancers onto a boat in the Titas River, saying they would perform songs and dances at a wedding ceremony. The victims were 18 and 16 years old. Later, they were taken in the middle of the Titas River and raped in turns on the boat.

After the rape, the six fled that same night, leaving the two young women at a ghat.

In connection with the incident, one of the victims filed a case with Sarail police station as the plaintiff. After the case, SRB began a shadow investigation. Later, using information technology, they identified the location of the main accused, Mujahid, and arrested him.

SRB's media officer and Additional Superintendent of Police KM Shahidul Islam Sohag said the arrested Mujahid has been handed over to the relevant police station. Earlier, police from Sarail police station arrested another accused in the case.

He said the remaining accused involved in the crime have already been identified. Strong operations are continuing to arrest them.
