Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has expressed hope that the United Arab Emirates government will hand over former Inspector General of Police Benazir Ahmed to Bangladesh shortly.
The minister made the remarks during a briefing on Saturday.
He said that an extradition request, along with all relevant case documents, has already been sent to the UAE to bring back Benazir Ahmed, who is currently detained in Dubai.
Earlier, on June 12, Benazir Ahmed was arrested in Dubai. The UAE government informed Bangladesh of the arrest via email.
Benazir Ahmed had left the country with his family on May 4, 2024, while under investigation for corruption. A Red Notice had been issued against him through Interpol.
No official statement regarding the circumstances of Benazir Ahmed's arrest has been issued so far by the UAE Ministry of Interior, Dubai Police, or Bangladesh Police.
Meanwhile, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has completed the preparation of the necessary documents for bringing Benazir Ahmed back to the country. A formal request letter has been finalised and sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Benazir Ahmed served as Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (2010–2015) and Director General of RAB (2015–2020) during the tenure of the Awami League government, which was ousted in the July mass uprising. He was appointed IGP in April 2020 and held the post until September 2022.
