Primeasia University
The investigation into the murder case of Primeasia University student and Chhatra Dal leader Jahidul Islam Parvez in Banani, Dhaka, has been completed. Police have filed a charge sheet against nine people, including two young women allegedly involved in the killing. However, investigators have recommended dropping charges against eight others, including Sobhan Niaz Tushar, joint convener of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement at Banani Police Station. The charge sheet was submitted by investigating officer and Banani Police Inspector A K M Moin Uddin.
The investigation found that Parvez had apologized after a settlement at the university’s proctor office. However, he was later killed following instigation and provocation by the two young women.
Investigating officer, A K M Moin Uddin told Agamir Somoy, “We have submitted a charge sheet against nine accused in this case. We have also recommended dropping charges against eight others. Of them, involvement of four could not be proven, while the remaining four were involved but their full identities and addresses could not be confirmed.”
Complainant Humayun Kabir said, “We expect the maximum punishment for the accused in this murder case. After Eid, we will submit an application to the Prime Minister seeking swift completion of the trial.”
The accused named in the charge sheet are, Meheraz Islam, Abu Zohar Giffari alias Piyash, Md Mahathir Hasan, Md Al Kamal Sheikh alias Kamal, Alvi Hossain Junaed, Al Amin Sani, Fatema Tahsin Oishi, Faria Haque Tina, and Rakib.
Among them, Piyash, Oishi, and Rakib remain absconding, and investigators have recommended arrest warrants against them. Those recommended for acquittal, apart from Sobhan Niaz, are Maruf Miaji Hridoy, Rifat, Ali, Fahim, Sakib, Nasim, and Nibir.
Piyash, Meheraz, Mahathir, and Kamal called friends over phone
Victim Jahidul Islam Parvez was the only son of his parents. He was a third-year student in the Textile Engineering Department of Prime Asia University. On April 19, 2025, he went to the university to sit for his midterm examination. After the exam, around 3:00 pm, Parvez was standing with his friends Tariqul and Imtiaz, along with others, on the footpath opposite the university, talking and laughing.
At that time, fellow student Abu Zohar Giffari Piyash, along with his friends Fatema Tahsin Oishi and Faria Haque Tina, were standing nearby. The two girls assumed that Parvez and his friends were mocking them. Piyash then approached Parvez and asked why they were laughing. An argument broke out. Piyash then called Meheraz over the phone, asking him to come to the scene immediately.
Meheraz arrived with Mahathir and began arguing in support of Piyash. Mahathir then called Kamal, Junaed, and Sani, asking them to bring others to the university gate. Meheraz also called his friend Nasim to bring people quickly. Kamal called Fahim, asking him to arrive with friends. Fahim arrived with Sakib. After receiving calls, Junaed, Sani, and Rakib also reached the spot. Nasim arrived after Meheraz’s call. They gathered and created a chaotic situation in support of Piyash and attempted to assault Parvez.
If I have done wrong, please forgive me, said Parvez
A textile engineering teacher noticed the commotion and quickly came downstairs. Piyash, Meheraz, Mahathir, Oishi, Tina, Parvez, and Tariqul were taken to the proctor’s office. Assistant Proctor Haseem and others were present. They heard both sides. In the tense situation, teacher Sushma Saha Swati and others mediated and resolved the matter. Both sides embraced each other in reconciliation. At that time, addressing Oishi and Tina as his sisters, Parvez said, “Although I have done nothing wrong, if you think I am at fault, please forgive me.”
The matter ended there.
Parvez could not save himself even by running
After the settlement, around 4:40 pm on the same day, outside the university, accused Nasim attacked Parvez’s friend Tariqul Islam with a wooden rod, leaving him seriously injured. Meheraz, Fahim, and others also punched and beat him on various parts of his body, including his head. Soon after, they spotted Parvez and attacked him.
Meheraz first punched and slapped him. Nasim beat him with a wooden rod. As Parvez ran to save his life and reached the main gate of the university, Sakib struck him with a flower pot. Parvez fell to the ground. As he tried to stand up again, Rakib stabbed him on the left side of his chest, causing a severe bleeding injury. Parvez then entered the university gate, bleeding heavily from his chest.
Teacher Sushma Saha Swati tied his wound with her scarf, and students used their shirts to stop the bleeding before rushing him to Kurmitola General Hospital’s emergency unit, where doctors declared him dead.
Earlier, on April 19 last year, Jahidul Islam Parvez was killed. The following day, on April 20, his cousin Humayun Kabir filed a murder case at Banani Police Station.
