The government has launched a major reform initiative to make the entry and departure process for foreign nationals in Bangladesh easier, more streamlined, and more modern. It has begun work on updating the two-decade-old Visa Policy 2006 with a new framework tailored to current needs. To review, refine, and finalize the draft policy prepared by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the government has formed a high-level Cabinet committee chaired by the finance minister. The Ministry of Home Affairs will provide secretarial support to the committee.
The Cabinet formed the committee at its meeting on Thursday, according to a statement issued by the Cabinet Division.
Over the past two decades, significant changes have taken place in the global economy, technology, and international diplomatic relations. Against that backdrop, the government has moved to replace the outdated and bureaucratic 2006 policy with a modern, service-oriented, and secure immigration framework. Officials said the new visa policy aims to boost foreign investment, attract skilled global talent, support the growth of the tourism sector, and facilitate international travel based on the principle of reciprocity.
Officials involved in the process said the existing visa framework remains largely focused on control and security. Under the proposed policy, the government’s primary objective will be to reduce bureaucratic hurdles and ensure faster visa processing for foreign investors and business travelers. The policy will also seek to expand tourism by making entry procedures easier for international visitors and strengthening the tourism and hospitality industries.
The new framework will modernize the country’s points of entry, including airports and land ports, through a fully digital tracking system and e-visa management. After conducting a detailed review of the draft, the special committee led by the finance minister will submit the final version to the Cabinet for approval.
