A clash erupted between police and Jagannath University (JnU) students at the Murgitola intersection in Old Dhaka, leaving more than eight students injured.
Gendaria Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Moniruzzaman confirmed the matter. The incident, which occurred around 2 am on Tuesday, resulted in several students being hospitalized.
According to students, the conflict began when alleged drug dealers attacked several JnU students. When news of the attack spread, other students rushed to the scene, prompting the suspects to retreat into a nearby house and lock the gate from the inside.
Police arrived and surrounded the building, but the suspects reportedly used the delay in opening the gate to escape through the second floor. Then they detained the owner and another individual.
Students alleged that while one suspect was taken to the station immediately, the owner was held at the scene for nearly four hours. Tensions boiled over when a student slapped the owner as police were finally moving him, prompting officers to launch a widespread baton-charge without warning.
Among those seriously hurt are Limon, the secretary of the Jagannath University Press Club, and a law department student who sustained a severe head injury.
OC Moniruzzaman said that the baton-charge was necessary to maintain control after students attempted to snatch a detainee to assault him. More than 200 students gathered to surround the house.
He added that five police members, including an additional deputy commissioner, were injured.
