A man accused of killing a dog by tying a brick around its neck and throwing it into a river has been arrested after Prime Minister Tarique Rahman ordered authorities to take immediate action over the incident.
According to the Prime Minister's Press Wing, Tarique Rahman was deeply distressed after learning about the act of animal cruelty. The statement said he was shocked that such inhumane treatment of an animal could occur in a civilized society and instructed authorities to take swift action against those responsible.
The incident recently took place near Nagoriakandi Bridge in Narsingdi Sadar Upazila. According to reports, a man tied a brick around a dog's neck and threw it into a river, where the animal struggled before drowning. A video of the incident later went viral on social media, sparking widespread public outrage.
Following the prime minister's directive, members of the Narsingdi District Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal located the suspect, identified as Mohammad Ali, and handed him over to police.
Authorities also allege that a local woman, Shahin Ara, encouraged Mohammad Ali to kill the dog because she wanted to get rid of what she considered a nuisance. Local residents claim Mohammad Ali has long struggled with drug addiction.
