Will Kerala Return to ‘Alternating Politics’, or Will LDF Hold On?

Will Kerala Return to ‘Alternating Politics’, or Will LDF Hold On?

In India’s Kerala state, uncertainty and speculation surrounding the recent election stem largely from the region’s long-standing political tradition. Voting across all 140 seats took place in a single phase on April 9, and with results scheduled for May 4, state politics now sits at the center of intense debate.

For decades, Kerala’s electoral history followed a clear pattern of 'alternating power'. From the 1980s until 2016, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the United Democratic Front (UDF) took turns forming governments over nearly four decades. Voters consciously changed governments every five years, maintaining a form of political balance. This pattern broke in 2021 when the LDF, under Pinarayi Vijayan, returned to power for a second consecutive term and made history by winning 99 seats.

What exit polls suggest

Exit polls in Kerala indicate a highly competitive race this time. While most surveys show a slight edge for the UDF, the LDF remains close behind, suggesting a tight contest. Significant variation across different polling agencies has further deepened uncertainty—some project a clear UDF victory, while others point to an LDF majority.

Overall, many exit polls predict a setback for Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s government and a possible return of the UDF. Although the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) maintains a limited presence, some surveys also suggest it could secure a notable number of seats.

What recent history shows

Recent election results are particularly important in understanding voter behavior in Kerala. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the UDF won 19 of 20 seats, but local body elections soon after delivered the opposite outcome in favor of the LDF. Then, the 2021 assembly election confirmed a strong LDF victory, showing that Kerala voters assess each election in a different context.

Analysts say voter priorities shift depending on the type of election. While national trends influence parliamentary polls, state and local elections are driven by different issues. In particular, welfare measures during the COVID-19 pandemic—such as free ration distribution and assistance programs—significantly influenced voter decisions.

Leadership has also played a key role. The LDF projected a strong and unified leadership, while the opposition struggled to present a cohesive message. Analysts note that in modern politics, narrative-building and credible leadership increasingly shape electoral outcomes.

Overall, the Kerala election is not just a contest for power. It also raises a broader question: will voters return to the traditional cycle of alternating governments, or will the political shift seen in 2021 become the new norm? The results on May 4 will provide the answer.
