Britain is preparing for the possibility of a third world war, even though such a scenario has not yet become a reality, as Europe appears to be getting ready for that possibility. Facing the threat of a potential Russian ‘hybrid’ attack, the UK government is set to advise British citizens to stockpile food, water and essential supplies. At the same time, new defense exercises are being planned across the country as part of wartime preparedness.
Under a new plan being developed by ministers, households will be given guidance on how to prepare for emergencies.
Concerns among the United Kingdom and its allies have grown as Russian President Vladimir Putin has adopted an increasingly aggressive stance and attacks on Britain’s critical infrastructure have increased. In a significant admission, however, Prime Minister’s close ally Darren Jones said the government fears that a foreign state could launch a “hybrid” attack against the United Kingdom as early as next year.
He told MPs that a ‘national homeland defense exercise’ involving government officials would be held to plan the government’s response to such a situation. It is part of a “resilience and public awareness program” aimed at preparing the public.
Jones said, “People can take small but important steps to be prepared when emergencies and disruptions to services occur.”
He told MPs that the country must be prepared for potential cyberattacks that could “affect electricity, water, mobile phone connections or access to food from local stores.”
The warning comes after a strategic defense review conducted in Whitehall last year. The review said hostile states are attacking the United Kingdom every day.
The states mentioned included Vladimir Putin’s Russia as well as Iran.
The report said Putin has demonstrated a willingness to use ‘military force, harm civilians and threaten the use of nuclear weapons.’
The European alliance currently advises citizens to keep essential supplies for at least 72 hours. These include identification documents, canned food, bottled water, matches and even a Swiss Army knife.
Jones sought to reassure MPs, saying the United Kingdom has previously ‘successfully faced many challenges, including pandemics, plague, war and severe weather.’
He added, “The right thing to do is to regularly assess the risks we may face and plan for the future.”
Last May, ministers were warned that Britain’s critical supply systems are not prepared to withstand a major shock such as a war with Russia. Rapid and bold action is needed to keep pace with plans in other European countries for dealing with the ‘worst-case scenario.’
A study published in Westminster by the National Preparedness Commission said Britain lags behind many European countries in building essential stockpiles, including emergency medicines. It called for a new preparedness plan.
In 2027, the largest ‘national homeland defense exercise’ in the history of the United Kingdom will be held. Hundreds of officials will take part to test the country’s preparedness against potential coordinated threats and ensure coordination with NATO allies.
