Gopalganj is under tight security ahead of July 16 to prevent unrest on the anniversary of violent clashes that occurred in the district on the same date last year
The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has been deployed in Gopalganj to strengthen security ahead of July 16, amid concerns over possible unrest.
BGB personnel began patrolling key areas of the town from Wednesday morning. They are conducting joint patrols with members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and the police.
Police have also set up checkpoints at several important locations across the town. In addition, plainclothes law enforcement personnel have been deployed as part of heightened security measures.
The move comes in the wake of violence on July 16, 2025, when clashes between law enforcement agencies and Awami League activists during the National Citizen Party's (NCP) road march in Gopalganj left five people dead and many more injured.
The administration said the enhanced security measures were taken over fears that the anniversary of the incident could trigger unrest or lead to a deterioration in the law and order situation.
