A draw would have been enough to secure a spot in the main event, but the Bangladesh women's hockey team clinched their qualification with a victory. By defeating Hong Kong 2–1 in their final group match of the qualifiers, the Bangladeshi girls reached the semifinals and, for the first time in history, confirmed their participation in the main stage of the Asian Games.
The qualifiers for this edition of the Asian Games marked the first-ever international tournament for the Bangladesh women’s team. They have made their debut appearance truly memorable. In their opening group match, Bangladesh played out a thrilling 5–5 draw against Chinese Taipei. They followed that up with a 3–2 win over Uzbekistan in the second match. Heading into the final game, a draw was all they needed to reach the semifinals and grab a ticket to the main event.
Hong Kong, ranked 34th in the world, took an early lead in the very first minute of the match. However, Bangladesh did not take long to respond. In the 10th minute, midfielder Nadira Emma found the back of the net with a brilliant strike from a scramble in front of the goal. The first half ended in a 1–1 deadlock.
Bangladesh took the lead early in the second half. Kona Akter put the team ahead in the 39th minute. Holding onto the lead until the final whistle, the Bangladesh women's team celebrated a 2–1 victory and their historic qualification.
The 20th edition of the Asian Games is scheduled to be held in Japan this September and October. This will be the first time that both the Bangladesh men's and women's hockey teams participate in the prestigious event together.
