Police came under attack while going to arrest Waqil Hossain, an expelled leader of the Jubo Dal and a listed criminal, in Chattogram city. The police vehicle was stopped after a road was barricaded and bricks and other objects were thrown at it. Police brought the situation under control by firing rubber bullets and sound grenades, prompting the attackers to flee.

Six police personnel, including Khulshi Police Station Officer in Charge Mohammad Abdur Rahim, were injured in the incident.

The incident took place Friday morning near Wireless Mor in the Khulshi Police Station area of the city. Several police personnel who declined to be named said Waqil had learned about the operation in advance and had made preparations to prevent police from reaching him with the help of his followers.

Waqil Hossain (42), lives in the Wireless Colony area of the city. He was the joint convener of the Chattogram Metropolitan Jubo Dal. The listed criminal of the Chattogram Metropolitan Police has 17 cases against him including extortion, drug and explosives related cases. He was expelled from the Jubo Dal on June 8 over various allegations including occupying government land and involvement in gunfire.

Police said a group of criminals beat and injured Mizanur Rahman, a temporary teacher at Pahartali College, on August 29. A case was filed at Khulshi Police Station naming Waqil as a suspect.

OC Mohammad Abdur Rahim told Agamir Somoy, “After the case was filed, Waqil repeatedly called my official phone number through WhatsApp, abused me and also threatened me. In this situation, we launched an operation to arrest him. After leaving the police station, when we reached the Wireless Colony intersection 15 to 20 yards away, we saw a barricade on the road. Several hundred people were there. Our vehicle could not move forward. They immediately started throwing bricks and glass bottles at the vehicle and the police. Cocktails were also detonated.”

“We had to fire rubber bullets and sound grenades in self-defense and to bring the situation under control. I, my bodyguard and four other police personnel were injured by brick attacks. My official vehicle was damaged,” the OC said.

OC Abdur Rahim also said police operations were underway to arrest Waqil and the other attackers who fled the scene.
